Israeli medics strike after nurse burned to death

The Jewish Chronicle - - WORLD NEWS - BY ROSA DOHERTY

ISRAELI HEALTH workers went on strike this week to highlight concerns over violence directed at staff after a nurse was burned to death by a patient.

Tova Carero, 56, was attacked on Monday in her clinic in Holon by disgruntled patient, who threw a bottle of flammable liquid at her before setting her alight.

The suspect, a man in his 70s and who is thought to suffer from mental illness, escaped the scene by car, but was arrested on Tuesday following a manhunt.

It is believed Ms Carero had given the man a flu jab last week, but he returned to complain after he felt unwell.

Despite medical staff’s assurances that his reaction was a routine sideeffect, he refused to accept their advice.

Local police chief Sigal Bar Tzvi said: “Following an argument, he poured a flammable liquid he had brought with him on the nurse and set her on fire. Resuscitation efforts failed and she was pronounced dead at the scene.”
