JEWISH cuisine was the catch of the day on Tuesday, as the BBC aired its first helping of Best of British Takeaway and charted the legacy of one of our most revered dishes — fish and chips.
A combination of fried fish sold on street stalls by Jewish immigrants with the proliferation of deep-fried chips among busy industrial workers sent the pairing — and our local chippy — straight into the nation’s hearts.
Of course, we’ve always known about this cultural legacy, but it is good to see it proclaimed to the masses. Batter late than never.
