Rabbis fear for stolen sifrei Torah
THIEVES WHO raided the Mill Hill home of rabbis Jackie and Larry Tabick thought the metal cabinet they took away housed valuable gems. In fact, it contained two sifrei Torah belonging to the Shir Hayim Reform community in Hampstead, where Larry Tabick is minister.
Now the couple fear the robbers have dumped the scrolls, as they would be difficult to sell without arousing suspicion.
Shir Hayim is one of the smallest Reform congregations with around 80 adult members. Its third sefer Torah, a Czech memorial scroll, was stored at another location.
Other communities have offered to lend a sefer Torah to Shir Hayim, among them West Central Liberal Synagogue, which is served by Jackie Tabick.
A small amount of cash and some jewellery of insignificant value were also taken in the raid.
“We imagine the thieves will have been most disappointed when they opened the cabinet,” Jackie Tabick reflected.
“No jewellery, just two scrolls. And we assume they have thrown away the cabinet and the scrolls.”
One of the missing scrolls has a blue mantle, the other has a red one. Both feature gold embroidered Hebrew letters. It is believed they were originally purchased in Israel.
The Tabicks are urging anyone with information to ring the local police on 101.
