Dublin City Hall set to fly Palestinian flag

The Jewish Chronicle - - NEWS - BY BEN WEICH

THE PALESTINIAN flag will be flown over Dublin City Hall in “solidarity with occupied and displaced” Palestinians, to coincide with Israeli Independence Day, councillors have said.

The move was agreed at a Dublin City Council protocol committee meeting, and will be passed to a full council vote on May 8.

The Israeli embassy in Ireland said approving the motion would “defame the good name of the city of Dublin and its citizens”.

A spokesman for the embassy said: “It will in effect raise a white flag of submission to terror organisations, hatred and blackmail.”

The motion was proposed by Councillor John Lyons, of the People Before Profit Alliance, who has often voiced pro-Palestinian sentiment on social media.

It proposed that “noting recent reports of diplomatic developments by the Irish state toward full recognition of the state of Palestine… this city council will fly the flag of Palestine over City Hall for the month of May 2017 in support of the above diplomatic moves and as a gesture of our solidarity with the people of Palestine living under occupation in the West Bank

and Gaza”.

In a separate development, Trinity College Dublin students union council has voted against supporting Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement against Israel.
