Shatilov will soldier on

GYMNASTICS ALEX Shatilov won the bronze medal in the European Gymnastics Championships floor exercise in Romania.

Shatilov, 30, finished with a respectable 14,400-point haul but he was almost ousted from the medal spot by 19-year-old Israeli star Artem Dolgopyat who finished fourth with 14,333 points.

This was Shatilov’s seventh medal in European Championships since 2009, including a gold in Moscow. He produced a much-improved display after disappointing at the Rio Olympics where he failed to reach the final.

Shatilov commented: “I am glad I did not retire. I would have really missed moments like this. The medal has restored my appetite to continue in the sport.”

Shatilov is now focusing on September’s World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal.
