Silver lining for wheelchair tennis stars

TENNIS ISRAEL’S quad wheelchair players won silver medals at the World Team Cup in Sardinia after a narrow defeat to Great Britain the final.

Paralympic­s gold medallist Noam Gershony gave Israel the lead, beat- ing James Shaw 6-2 6-1, but GB levelled when Andy Lapthorne defeated Shraga Weinberg.

GB won the decisive rubber 6-3, 6-0 as Antony Cotterill and Lapthorne overcame Gershony and Weinberg.

Israel head of delegation Koby Weiner said: “To have reached the final by beating the Americans was a major achievemen­t.”

Meanwhile, Israel have been drawn with Britain, Greece and an unseeded qualifier in Group H of the European qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Basketball Championsh­ips in Guangzhou, China.
