The Egyp­tian gov­ern­ment is to spend $2 mil­lion to ren­o­vate a 19th cen­tury sy­n­a­gogue that used to be at the heart of Alexan­dria’s bustling Jewish com­mu­nity. Prior to post­war pogroms that sent most flee­ing for Is­rael, the United States and France, there were tens of thou­sands of Jews liv­ing in the city. To­day, there are only around a dozen left in the en­tire coun­try
