Pow­er­lifter Ben top of the class

SPORT BEN Sugarman has won the JFS Sports­man of the Year award.

The pow­er­lifter was recog­nised for his out­stand­ing achieve­ments af­ter fin­ish­ing fourth at the World Cham­pi­onships. He holds the ti­tles of Bri­tish and Com­mon­wealth cham­pion and record holder.

Layla Sk­lar was run­ner-up at the JFS awards, where for­mer FA and Arse­nal vice-chair­man David Dein pre­sented the prizes. Rep­re­sent­ing Great Bri­tain in the 11-16-year cat­e­gory, Sk­lar, 14, was the Bri­tish Paired Acro-Gym­nas­tics cham­pion. She won sil­ver over­all and gold in bal­ance at the Hol­land In­ter­na­tion­als.

Han­nah Fre­und was third fol­low­ing sil­ver in the na­tional Karate Cham­pi­onships for 16-18-year-olds. Fre­und, who also rep­re­sents GB, reg­u­larly com­petes against and beats male coun­ter­parts in mixed com­pe­ti­tions.

Mac­cabiah gold medal­list David Stone, a for­mer win­ner of the Lon­don mini-Marathon, was recog­nised as the top ath­lete at JFS. Ethan Mooney was named No. 1 foot­baller af­ter help­ing the Mid­dle­sex U18 team to win the FA Coun­ties Cup.

Jake Aspis won the school’s top ten­nis award and Libby Poster re­ceived the top hon­our in rounders. Rayno Green­wall-Co­hen was the star per­former in cricket while Yoav Aran was the star per­former in bas­ket­ball.

Other win­ners were Chloe Miller (sports per­son­al­ity), Sasha Leigh (sports coach), Josie Ken­ton (net­ball player of the year and sports of­fi­cial), Leah Ezekiel (Jef­frey Lewis win­ner) and Daniel Smith (Olympic le­gacy). Year 10 foot­ball were recog­nised as the JFS Team of the Year, while Darcy Shonn, Amy Rodin­sky and Eleanor Lousky col­lected prizes for danc­ing. The school’s first com­pet­i­tive dance team, who per­formed at the Lon­don Youth Games, won the Brent com­pe­ti­tion and fin­ished just out­side the top 10 at the Lon­don fi­nals.
