Leaders back Mexico earthquake appeal
SENIOR RABBIS and organisations across the community are backing World Jewish Relief’s emergency appeal for victims of the earthquake in Mexico.
More than 320 people were killed and thousands have been left homeless by the quake which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and hit the town of Rabo- so, 76 miles south-east of Mexico City.
WJR is asking for donations to to provide shelter, temporary accommodation and hygiene kits to victims.
Leaders from all the major denominations — Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, Rabbi Danny Rich, and Rabbi Joseph Dweck — have all expressed supported for the appeal.
Rabbi Mirvis said: “As the recovery effort in Mexico gets underway, every one of us can now play a part in helping to ease the pain of the tens of thousands of people who have lost everything.”
WJR said the appeal was separate from its Rosh Hashanah appeal for Jews in Eastern Europe. Details of both are at www.worldjewishrelief.org.
