Recognised for autism support

KISHARON SCHOOL in Golders Green has been awarded autism accreditation in what is believed to be a first for a UK Jewish organisation.

Following an assessment, the National Autistic Society found that although autistic pupils represented only a quarter of the roll, Kisharon was fully committed to developing specialist approaches.

“The school places great value on promoting Jewish values and culture while recognising the need to differentiate what is taught so that it has meaning and value to each pupil,” the society noted. “This makes an important contribution to the inclusion of each autistic pupil within family and community activities, rituals and festivals.” All teachers receive “what is autism”? training.

School head Sora Kopfstein said the autism accreditation was “a testament to our commitment to and understanding of the needs of our pupils with autism. To be recognised is extremely encouraging for all our staff, parents and students. It demonstrates that we are offering some of the best autism-specific services in the Jewish community.”
