Bring history back into your home
“IMAGINE A family Chanukah where you can borrow an object brought to this country 100 years ago from the place your own family migrated from. Imagine learning its history and seeing it intertwine with your own.” So says Frances Jeens, interim director of the Jewish Museum London, announcing a new scheme whereby objects from the collection will be available on loan to individuals, groups and organisations for a specific purpose and period of time. Thanks to funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Museum will be bringing unseen objects out from the collection into a wide range of community spaces.
The first phase of the scheme is identifying the objects that can be borrowed from the museum’s store rooms, pictured. Eventually schools, care homes and places of worship will have the opportunity to display and learn from objects, and connect to the museum and its wider collection, in their own environment. The museum also sees possibilities in linking to wider events such as Refugee Week, International Women’s Day, Black History Month and Jewish festivals. Details of how to get involved will soon be announced on the museum’s website and on social media.
