It was how the par­ti­cles of dust in sun­light swirled and slowly fell: how as a boy barely thir­teen he stood over the chess­board mes­mer­ized by its bronze pieces, and in that late af­ter­noon light as if by their still­ness alone he might know the weight of ev­ery pos­si­ble move, as if he might al­ways be there in this room with a woman he would never know, not know­ing why he had come or why he was there, if not to play then to pay his re­spects to the sun­light, to those par­ti­cles of dust float­ing through the air.
