NETFLIX, FROM FRIDAY In the early 1960s, Sarah Lee Gorelick (front left), Irene Leverton, Jean Hixson and Jan Dietrich (back, l-r) were part of a group of 13 female pilots who set out to prove they had ‘the right stuff’ for spaceflight by undergoing the same rigorous tests as the male astronauts trained by Nasa. Here, those unlucky but inspiring 13 are profiled, and there’s an insight into the role that sex discrimination played in denying them a chance to reach for the stars.
