stephen: the murder that changed a Nation

The Mail on Sunday - Event - - THE TVPAGES -

BBC1, 9pm

However familiar the facts concerning the murder of Stephen Lawrence in April 1993 may be, the shock and horror never fades, nor the disbelief about the failures of the police in investigating his killing.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the brutal crime, a three-part documentary series (continuing on Wednesday and Thursday) reconstructs the saga as it unfolded over years, leading eventually to a public inquiry, changes in the law and far-reaching reforms of the police.

The opening episode features previously unseen footage of Stephen, reminding us of the young man with an ebullient personality whose life was taken in an act of mindless racism. While Stephen’s mother Doreen (above, with father Neville) speaks of her fury at how detectives treated the case as if it was her son who had been the criminal, his friend Duwayne Brooks shares his traumatised memories of the fatal stabbing. This is unmissable, unforgettable viewing.
