This week’s cd releases
Bradley Cooper introduces himself as a gruff interpreter of squally guitar-rock and acquits himself well. Lady Gaga, meanwhile, gets to do a few big, modern pop tunes, a Carole King-style turn and various ballads. A tie-in hit.
Bottle It In Out now
Kurt Vile is the kind of rock star people tend to compare to Neil Young, though that doesn’t quite capture his brand of quirky indie-rock. If it sometimes sounds like he’s just finding a groove and then free-associating over the top, that’s part of the appeal.
Songs Of The Plains Out now
With a voice that comes up from the bottom of his boots, Canadian Colter Wall strums, rumbles and yodels about farming, the death of the railroad and his distrust of big-city folk. It’s quite a routine, served up with conviction and charm.
