Meet artful Alice

The Mail on Sunday - You - - Front Row -

Designer Alice Archer (left) is one to watch this London Fashion Week (which is currently in full swing) – and for many more to come. The 31-year-old worked for Tracey Emin and Dries van Noten before setting up on her own, supported by Simon Burstein, son of Browns founder Joan Burstein, who, like his mother, can be relied upon to spot a future fashion star. Alice’s exquisitely embroidered pieces are perhaps wasted in a wardrobe – if they’re not being worn we suggest they be hung on a wall. And, hey, it might be easier to justify a £2,000 price tag if you’re getting a work of art as well as a dress. We’re looking for all the excuses we can find. INSPIRATION My aunt Celia Paul is a wonderful artist. She painted me as a child and has been a huge influence on me. Embroidery is a way to express what I call my ‘painterlyness’ in fashion. YOUR MOSTANTICIPATED LFW SHOWS? Simone Rocha’s and Roksanda Ilincic’s – both use colour and textiles magically. YOUR MADE-IT MOMENT? Some of my pieces were recently featured in the window at Barney’s in New York as part of a British Fashion Council event. The fact that I was featured alongside designers such as Erdem was incredible. WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO DRESS? Lily James or Felicity Jones. To dress someone for the Oscars is the dream; some of my gowns are made for the red carpet. UNIFORM I’m pretty scruffy! But I love shoes – Marni and Dorateymur are my favourites. DOWNTIME I’m a homebody when I can be – my boyfriend and I recently bought a flat in Brockley, South London. In the run-up to LFW I was in my studio from 7am till midnight. You can’t get far in this business without working till the last tube! Alice’s pieces cost from £400 to £2,300 and are available from theplacelondon.co.uk
