DON’T MENTION BREXIT!

MPs’ peace-making trip to Germany ends in slanging match at Chancellor’s HQ

- By Brendan Carlin POLITICAL REPORTER

ANGELA MERKEL’S right-hand man witnessed British MPs get involved in a bad-tempered Brexit slanging match at the German Chancellor’s Berlin HQ, it was revealed last night.

Minister Peter Altmaier, one of Mrs Merkel’s closest allies, sat open-mouthed as the politicians traded verbal blows – and it wasn’t the only argument during their trip to Germany.

After a separate row in a restaurant with pro-Merkel politicians later the same day, Tory MP David Davies stormed out, declaring: ‘I’m sick of being accused of lying. I’m bloody glad we’re leaving the EU!’ The ‘Don’t mention Brexit’ clashes happened when Parliament’s allparty British-German group travelled to Berlin to explain to Mrs Merkel’s ruling CDU party why the UK had voted to leave the EU.

Davies, who fights in charity boxing matches as the ‘Tory Tornado’, found he was the only member of the delegation in favour of leaving. His first dust-up was with anti-Brexit Labour MP Ian Lucas.

The argument happened at a meeting with Altmaier, Head of the German Federal Chancellery and Minister for Special Tasks.

When Lucas tore into the Leave campaign’s tactics in the run-up to the referendum, Davies angrily accused him of ‘talking nonsense’.

A witness said: ‘It all kicked off. Altmaier was taken aback at the sight of two British politicians having a blazing row.’

When the MPs dined later that day, Davies got into a dispute with MPs from the CDU party, who accused those running the Leave campaign of misleading voters. Davies stood up and shouted: ‘I’ve had enough! I’m not going to sit here and be called a liar.’ He stormed out, adding: ‘I’m off to have a McDonald’s.’

A witness said: ‘The Germans looked at Davies as though he had horns.’
