Now young rebel by NOT having affairs

- By Sanchez Manning

THEY drink and smoke less than their parents’ generation – and now it has been revealed that young people have a less tolerant attitude to adultery as well.

A survey has revealed that 66 per cent of 18-to-34 year olds believe that it is ‘never acceptable’ to cheat on your spouse, compared to just 46 per cent of 55-to-64 year olds. Explaining why her generation has a more laid-back attitude to adultery, broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, 54, said an error of the baby-boom generation was to assume that ‘liberation could be illustrated by the number of sexual partners you had and how free you felt to embark on affairs’.

But she added: ‘In the intervening decades we’ve learnt, particularly with women, that liberation is nothing to do with how many sexual partners you have.’

Kirby Swales, from the National Centre for Social Research, said: ‘There are a number of possible explanations, such as the emergence of “generation sensible”, or it could even be a product of growing up with peak divorce rates.’

The survey, conducted by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), questioned a sample of almost 1,400 people representing the general population.
