Clifton brace sinks Greens
IN THE first of two home games against bottom four sides, it was important for Staines, who had played more games than anyone else in the league, to get points on the board.
However, at half-time, the Greens were on track to enhance their already good away record as they held a lead garnered after six minutes. A devastating long throw by Luke Pingey was powered home by skipper Casey Maclaren.
Hendon keeper Tom Lovelock made important saves to keep out Brandon Adams and Daniel Brown while Wadah Ahmedi also went close.
Hendon also had their chances, the best perhaps falling to Karl Oliyide, whose chipped attempt was smothered by Jack Turner, who was celebrating his 250th Staines appearance.
Staines came back dramatically with a burst of three goals in ten minutes, beginning on the hour when Tommy Brewer’s shot was met by a misdirected defensive header and Afolabi Coker was able to twist and head beyond Lovelock.
Two minutes later, Hendon failed to clear a corner and Adrian Clifton steadied to blast home from 12 yards – his sixth of the season but first at home. Clifton then made it 3-1, unable to believe his good fortune that Sam Barratt’s cheeky freekick from the left corner flag travelled across the goal face for him to side-foot home.
Hendon snatched a stoppage-time consolation, Maclaren netting his second with a glancing header after a high ball into the box.
