The Non-League Football Paper - - FA VASE FOURTH ROUND - By Tim Joesbury-Clarke

DAVID MEESE kept his cool to fire Sporting Khalsa into the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in their history.

The midfielder held his nerve as he converted a decisive spot kick 12 minutes from time to see off the plucky challenge of tenman Tring Athletic.

A replay had looked on the cards for most of the game as both sides struggled to create chances during an often scrappy encounter at the Aspray Arena.

Willenhall-based Khalsa started brightly with Brad Lawley heading a corner narrowly over, but the visitors began to look more threatening as the game approached half-time.

Athletic’s Luke Dunstan drilled a shot narrowly wide and Chris Vardy just failed to connect with Lee Stobbs’ dangerous cross as Tring grew in confidence.

Vardy came agonisingly close to converting a teasing Tommy Twelves cross shortly after the restart, but it was the hosts who broke through on 78 minutes.

Forward Luke Shearer was clumsily fouled in the box, giving Meese the chance to thump home an unstoppable spot kick.

Tring’s frustration was compounded deep into injury time when David O’Connor was shown a straight red card for a late lunging challenge. STAR MAN: Tes Robinson (Sporting Khalsa) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
