Late hero Cornhill fires classy Clarets

The Non-League Football Paper - - NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH - By Matt Lee

MAX CORNHILL’S late winner propelled Chelmsford City up to third after their third league win in a row.

Struggling Whitehawk started well and Mike West dragged an effort wide after 20 minutes.

Ashley Miller’s wayward defensive header on 25 minutes almost allowed the visitors’ top scorer to net, but the striker ballooned his effort over.

Whitehawk keeper Thomas Stewart played an influential part in keeping the two sides apart throughout the first half, with the debutant stopper denying Shaun Jeffers, Elliott Buchanan and Josh Rees.

Rod Stringer’s introduction of debutant Chris Dickson revitalised the Clarets in the second half. The home side’s Friday signing spun had a great chance to open his account for City but took too long to shoot after Buchanan put him through.

Kane Haysman’s drilled effort could have broken the deadlock but no-one could get a conclusive touch as the game edged further towards a 0-0 draw.

But it was not to be for Whitehawk side as Cornhill stole the winner in the 80th minute – smashing home from close range. STAR MAN: Thomas Stewart (Whitehawk) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
