STEVE SHEEHAN’S 87thminute header earned second-bottom Canvey Island a smash-and-grab victory against high-flying Dulwich Hamlet.

After a quiet opening quarter of the game, Dulwich had the first chance, on 23 minutes, when Ibra Sekajja connected with an overhead kick from a corner.

The former Crystal Palace first team player hit the target but his effort was kept out by the face of Gulls full-back Jake Pitty.

Dulwich should have taken the lead on 42 minutes when striker Ashley Carew broke into the area, getting the better of Sheehan and Ryan Blackman. However, with a clear sight of goal Carew shot across the face and wide

It looked as though the pressure had finally told on 84 minutes when Marc Weatherstone seemed to have netted at the back post from a free kick.

However, Sheehan was on hand to produce a vital goal line clearance to keep Canvey in the game.

And three minutes later he earned the struggling Gulls all three points, when he rose highest to powerfully head an Ashley Dumas free-kick from the right past Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards.
