SEASON HARD TO BELIEVE – STILL

- By Ned Keating

DAGENHAM boss John Still was overjoyed as his men secured a play-off spot thanks to their first ever win at Wrexham.

Paul Benson’s first-half goal made sure the Daggers will finish in the top five.

Still told The NLP: “Unbelievable. To think of where we were. To have done this with the injuries we have had. I think it is absolutely remarkable that we have been able to do it.”

Benson's header found the target after a terrific ball in from winger Jordan MaguireDrew.

However, the hosts nearly completed a quick reply when Ntumba Massanka crossed to find Paul Rutherford unmarked but goalkeeper Mark Cousins saved comfortably.

Dagenham almost doubled their lead when an error gave Andre Boucard a chance but he shot wide and there was little of note until three minutes after the break. In-form Jordan White’s free-kick flew across the face of the Daggers’ goal to safety. However, the visitors started quickly, reasserted themselves and Luke Howell was just wide with a long-range strike that Shwan Jalal could only watch helplessly as it flew wide. White then headed over for Wrexham before Dagenham thought they had put the game to bed only for a superb save from Jalal to deny a curling shot from the left wing by Corey Whitely. Eight minutes before the final whistle the travelling supporters were nervous as substitute Izale McLeod’s header at the far post went narrowly off target. Wrexham boss Dean Keates was in philosophical mood. “Disappointing is probably the word you can use, probably the word you can use to summarise the season for our club,” he said. “A lot of huff and puff, we had a go, but missed the last bit of detail, the final ball or the final through ball into the box. We didn’t really create any chances at all.”
