VET­ERAN striker Paul Brayson marked his 40th birth­day with the win­ning goal as New­cas­tle Ben­field pro­gressed to the next round, de­spite a late red card.

The North­ern League side were re­duced to ten men in the 81st minute when Alex Nis­bet re­ceived a straight red for a late chal­lenge on Nick Platt.

Goals from Dy­lan McEvoy and Brayson were enough to se­cure vic­tory for Ben­field, how­ever, de­spite Alex John­son’s 86th minute con­so­la­tion.

Ben­field set­tled into the con­test and opened the scor­ing in the 34th minute as McEvoy rounded Ash­ley Frith to fire into an empty net.

Brayson al­most dou­bled Ben­field’s ad­van­tage in the 56th minute, hit­ting the bar with half-vol­ley.

The birth­day boy made no mis­take just a minute later, extending the home side’s lead af­ter los­ing his marker and lift­ing the ball over Frith.

Nis­bet’s straight red al­lowed Ash­ton a route back into the game and the visi­tors pulled a goal back with four min­utes left as John­son’s cross flew into the net.

The Robins pressed for a dra­matic late equaliser, with a 90th minute cross flash­ing across goal, but Ben­field held on to ad­vance to the next round.
