BRAYSON HITS BIG 40 IN STYLE
VETERAN striker Paul Brayson marked his 40th birthday with the winning goal as Newcastle Benfield progressed to the next round, despite a late red card.
The Northern League side were reduced to ten men in the 81st minute when Alex Nisbet received a straight red for a late challenge on Nick Platt.
Goals from Dylan McEvoy and Brayson were enough to secure victory for Benfield, however, despite Alex Johnson’s 86th minute consolation.
Benfield settled into the contest and opened the scoring in the 34th minute as McEvoy rounded Ashley Frith to fire into an empty net.
Brayson almost doubled Benfield’s advantage in the 56th minute, hitting the bar with half-volley.
The birthday boy made no mistake just a minute later, extending the home side’s lead after losing his marker and lifting the ball over Frith.
Nisbet’s straight red allowed Ashton a route back into the game and the visitors pulled a goal back with four minutes left as Johnson’s cross flew into the net.
The Robins pressed for a dramatic late equaliser, with a 90th minute cross flashing across goal, but Benfield held on to advance to the next round.
