The Non-League Football Paper - - FA CUP SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING - By Trevor Brock

SOUTHERN League Merthyr Town produced a battling display as they pushed their National South opponents Havant & Waterlooville all the way in an entertaining ti.

After taking a surprise early lead, the Martyrs were finally denied a last-gasp equaliser which would have taken the tie back to South Wales for a replay.

The visitors started the stronger, and man-of-the-match Mo Touray turned defender Ed Harris inside out before producing an inch-perfect cross which Ian Traylor headed past a helpless keeper Ryan Young from close range.

The home side took just eight second-half minutes to grab an equaliser, Alfie Rutherford broke down the right-hand side before crossing for leading scorer Jason Prior to side-foot home from 12 yards.

A substitution 13 minutes from time proved decisive. Williams again was involved as his well-struck corner was met by the head of James Hayter who netted the winner just ten seconds after being brought on.

The Martyrs threw everything at the home side and just before the end a free kick found its way to central defender Jarrad Wright who inexplicably poked the ball wide.
