The Non-League Football Paper - - FA CUP SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING - By Luke Pawley

AFC Telford United advanced to the next round after a hardfought victory against Barwell.

The visitors dominated early and went close to breaking the deadlock inside five minutes when Nigel Julien’s powerful left-footed shot struck the outside of the post.

Telford, though, took the lead after 17 minutes when Jordan Gough’s first-time strike deflected past wrongfooted keeper Liam Castle and into the Barwell goal.

Lifted by the goal, the home side began to settle and quickly neutralised Barwell’s attacking threat. Gough and Anthony Dwyer had chances to add a second, with the latter’s effort met by the linesman’s flag.

With Jimmy Ginnelly’s halftime words still ringing in their ears, the visitors started the second half just as they had the first, applying pressure and creating good chances. The best of these fell to Tom Bates but he was denied by Jasbir Singh on two occasions.

Just as in the first half, Telford improved and doubled their lead on 73 minutes when Jordan Murphy steered his header past Castle to score his second in as many games.

The goal took the fight out of the Canaries as the National League North side moved through to the next round.
