ARGENT DOES THE BUSINESS
SAM ARGENT’S triumphant return to the Camrose earned Basingstoke a fifth consecutive home league victory.
After scoring over 150 goals for Hartley Witney in the last three years, the forward took just four minutes to give his new side the lead, capitalising on a fumble by Jack Harding to finish from close range.
Banbury responded well, Luke Carnell spurning two good chances while Tom Winters fizzed a low shot just wide.
The Puritans found an equaliser on the stroke of halftime, Winters bursting beyond Charlie Kennedy before lashing a strike over home keeper Colm McAdden to take the sides in level at the break.
Ashleigh Artwell put the hosts back in front with his first touch immediately after coming on, tapping in at the far post from another Smart cross.
Banbury piled on the pressure in the last 15 minutes, George Nash sending a dipping volley just over, while McAdden made a good save from Ravi Shamsi.
At the the other end, Argent almost sealed the win with a superb chip that beat Harding but grazed the bar before Smart broke away and placed a perfect pass in behind Carnell for Argent to finish with his left foot at the death.
