MATTER OF PRINCIPLE TO HAMLET

The Non-League Football Paper - - NEWS -

THE RISE of gambling alongside football has been huge, with virtually every professional club having a betting partner. Now companies are increasingly seeing an opening in Non-League, which has certainly had its problems in the relationship, with some cases of players caught betting illegally.

In the Bostik League, Betting.net have signed up to sponsor performance of the month and season-end Fair Play awards and it has presented Dulwich Hamlet with a dilemma. While they accept the need for fellow Bostik clubs to raise revenue wherever they can, they personally are against such sponsorship.

Their solution is to agree to the terms of the sponsorship but donate any prize money resulting to a charity working with gambling addicts. And it has to be said that while the majority of fans can enjoy gambling responsibly, the potential for addiction is significant.

Well done to Hamlet. I hope, should the situation arise, those of us in the game will have the courage to take a similar decision based on sense and sensibility.
