Taylor takes aim as Moors leave it late

The Non-League Football Paper - - NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH - By Alan Jones

GLEN TAYLOR struck in the fifth minute of added time to earn Spennymoor Town victory in a dramatic finale at managerless Southport.

The home team looked to have earned a late equaliser, only for Jason Ainsley’s Moors to snatch the points as debutant Ross Sykes let a long ball slip under his foot, allowing Taylor to round goalkeeper Mark Halstead and plunder the winner.

It was particularly tough on Sykes, the teenage centre half who joined the Sandgrounders on loan from Accrington Stanley on Thursday. By common opinion, he was the game’s outstanding player, only for a towering performance to be marred by a costly error. SOUTHPORT 1 SPENNYMOOR TOWN 2

David Foley gave Spennymoor the lead on 40 minutes with a brilliant 20-yard strike and the hosts had Halstead to thank for numerous top saves.

Having hit the crossbar through Bury loanee Chris Sang, Southport must have thought they would be rewarded for their persistence with an 88th minute equaliser, Jack Sampson scoring after Kaiman Anderson had been denied, but they were unable to prevent a sixth straight defeat.

STAR MAN: Ross Sykes (Southport) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
