ALTRINCHAM DIG DEEP
AGAINST the top team in the league, Mickleover always knew that they were going to be up against it.
But although the points went back North with the visitors, Sports came out of the game with great credit.
Altrincham started the contest with an intensity that caught the hosts on the back foot.
Sports failed to clear a shot that had been pushed away at close range by keeper Lewis King and Tom Peers fired the ball into the net to give his side an 18th minute lead.
The visitors looked dangerous in the opening 30 minutes, attacking down the Sports right hand side. But the second goal on 29 minutes was struck home from a very narrow angle by Jordan Hulme on the left.
It was cruel for the home team who were unlucky to see an Evan Garnett shot deflect onto a post and away just a minute earlier.
Mickleover refused to cave in and the threat that they provided was emphasised by the amount of time wasting visiting keeper Anthony Thompson felt the need to do.
Sports pulled a goal back through Garnett on 85 minutes and were unlucky not to get an equaliser despite going close several times in the final stages of the game.
