Port’s changes bring a victory
AFTER so many changes in personnel, Southport’s league form now also seems to be turning.
The Sandgrounders recorded their second win in as many home games as they saw off Leamington.
The extent of the change in recent months is such that Jack Sampson was the only player to start this match who was playing for Port before the arrival of boss Kevin Davies in October.
And it was Sampson who put Southport on their way on nine minutes, steering the ball home with conviction after Adam Dawson, making his first start on the right wing, cut the ball back into the path of David Morgan.
The Sandgrounders proceeded to dominate and debutant Dion Charles, who signed in the week from Fleetwood Town, was their most vibrant attacking threat. After two earlier chances, Charles grazed the Leamington crossbar with a delicate shot from Dawson’s smart backheel.
Southport made sure of the points on 70 minutes, Jason Gilchrist applying the finishing touch to a clinical counter-attack after receiving a through-ball from the excellent Morgan. STAR MAN: David Morgan (Southport) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
