SPORTING MARCH ON

Newly-promoted Rouslers carry on unbeaten start

- By Max Banner

BROMSGROVE Sporting maintained their unbeaten start to life in the Southern League South Division One Central as goals from Nathan Hayward and Rich Gregory saw them humble Welwyn Garden City. The first half was one of few chances that the home side, champions of the Midlands League Premier Division last season, narrowly shaded. Will Shorrock had a couple of long-range chances that either went wide or found the hands of Welwyn keeper Dan Green whilst Josh Quaynor had a fierce shot that ultimately fizzed well wide. The deadlock was broken just past the hour-mark as a short corner saw Shorrock whip an enticing ball in the box, from which Nathan Hayward bulleted a header into the bottom corner from six yards out. Visitors Welwyn had chances to draw level as Jay Rolfe and Kaan Fehmi both had attempts well-saved by Sporting stopper Jono Brown. But the home side finally rounded things off 13 minutes from time as a Quaynor corner fell to Richard Gregory. He calmly took a touch that took him around keeper Green, leaving an open goal for the Bromsgrove man to dispatch the ball into. The visitors did come close to almost grabbing an injury time consolation goal. George Ironton’s low cross fell to teammate Samuel Oyeniran but his shot from no more than a yard out was saved by the resolute Brown.
