BLUEBIRDS’ LATE SHOW EARNS DRAW

- By Will Hulbert

CHIPPENHAM manager Mark Collier said the plan was to take the game as deep as possible but even he couldn’t have imagined just how deep.

The Bluebirds equalised in dramatic fashion when, after a minimum of four minutes’ stoppage time had been indicated, Chippenham took this tie to a replay with a 95th minute goal through sub Mike Jones.

The one shot on target in the first half saw Maidenhead’s Remy Clerima have a shot blocked on the line by keeper Brad House.

Maidenhead took the lead when they were awarded a free-kick and Christian Smith curled his shot into the top corner.

Chippenham were more of a threat after the break, forcing four successive corners. They looked to have shot their bolt as sub Jack Compton’s long throw found its way to James Guthrie, but his goalbound shot was blocked.

Two minutes from time Magpies keeper Carl Pentney’s punch fell to Jones but with the net beckoning he skewed his shot wide.

Then with seconds to go Chippenham sub Karnell Chambers rolled the ball to Jones, who slid his shot past Pentney to send the home supporters in the 706-strong crowd wild.
