WE’RE NOT WORTHY
I WRITE in reference to the Non-League Icons feature (NLP, June 28) on striker legend David Leworthy.
Signed by Fareham Town by former Portsmouth manager Richie Reynolds, David was an immediate success at the club, forming a formidable strike force with Kevin Bartlett, who later moved to the Football League.
As part of the transfer deal, Tottenham had to send a team to play a friendly at Cams Alders - and what an occasion it was!
Spurs sent a full first-team squad containing a number of Internationals including Ossie Ardiles – undoubtedly the most high profile player to play at Fareham to this day.
A record crowd of 2,015 saw David score a hat-trick against his old team as Spurs won 6-3. The referee that day was former FA Cup Final official Alan Robinson.
