Oral health improves in the isles
THERE are smiles all over the Western Isles after reports of a dramatic improvement of dental hygiene.
Oral health in the islands has improved as a result of Childsmile month, according to Na h-Eileanan an Iar MSP Alasdair Allan.
The government-funded programme ran in the Western Isles from June 29 until July 24 and around 1,800 children had a check-up in this time.
Since Childsmile began in 2010, the number of island youngsters registered with an NHS dentist has increased by 29 per cent. Children in primary one who are free of tooth decay has also risen by 16 per cent.
Mr Allan welcomed the improvements: ‘Childsmile is a great example of what can be achieved when we focus on prevention, rather than treatment, at a very young age.
‘ The Western Isles has needed to improve its dental health and so it is hugely encouraging to see just how much progress has been made in this area since 2010.’
