Mallaig relatives happy to be home

DELIGHTED Mallaig families welcomed their elderly relatives back to the village after living in Fort William for more than a year.

Four pensioners returned to the Mackintosh centre on Monday after being moved to Invernevis house amid allegations of staff poor practice last July.

A friend of the relatives said: ‘It’s been wonderful. They spent three hours together [on Tuesday] which they haven’t been able to do for a long time. The staff have been so accommodating and helpful and everyone seems happy.’

The Mackintosh centre was closed in July last year amid allegations of poor practice and abuse, although there was no criminal activity found during investigations. An internal process is still ongoing within NHS Highland. At the time it was thought the home would be closed for four to six weeks, but long-running recruitment problems caused the re- opening to be delayed eight times.
