Second spot for Connel’s John McPhee in Indianapolis
‘ We thought let’s take the gamble and go for it’
CONNEL’S John McPhee took second place in the rain-hit Red Bull Indianapolis Moto3 race to claim his first World Championship Grand Prix podium finish.
The race was marked by mixed weather conditions and something of a lottery over which tyres to use. The sudden onset of rain shortly after warm-up and ahead of the Moto3 start meant a difficult decision had to be made by the RSF-backed Saxoprint-RTG rider about which set-up to best match the changing conditions.
Although the track was still wet, the rain had stopped and McPhee opted to run on slick tyres, a decision which could be crucial if the rain was finished for the race duration and the track was to dry out. He had to start the race from the pitlane – taking a ridethrough penalty for the very late tyre change, while the main body of the bikes took off cautiously from the grid.
In the following laps, the track did dry out and the other riders came in to change to slicks as their soft wet tyres would not last the race distance.
