CON­NEL’S John McPhee took sec­ond place in the rain-hit Red Bull In­di­anapo­lis Moto3 race to claim his first World Cham­pi­onship Grand Prix podium fin­ish.

The race was marked by mixed weather con­di­tions and some­thing of a lottery over which tyres to use. The sud­den on­set of rain shortly af­ter warm-up and ahead of the Moto3 start meant a dif­fi­cult de­ci­sion had to be made by the RSF-backed Sax­o­print-RTG rider about which set-up to best match the chang­ing con­di­tions.

Although the track was still wet, the rain had stopped and McPhee opted to run on slick tyres, a de­ci­sion which could be cru­cial if the rain was fin­ished for the race du­ra­tion and the track was to dry out. He had to start the race from the pit­lane – tak­ing a ride­through penalty for the very late tyre change, while the main body of the bikes took off cau­tiously from the grid.

In the fol­low­ing laps, the track did dry out and the other riders came in to change to slicks as their soft wet tyres would not last the race dis­tance.
