West Ardnamurchan regatta was not for the faint-hearted
COMPETITORS in the annual West Ardnamurchan regatta had choppy waters to contend with as they battled with a strong wind last week.
The 32nd contest in the most westerly area of Britain saw the yachtsmen sail with discipline and concentration, but it was not enough for the crew of Wayfarer, which was swamped and forced to retire during the Challenge Cup on Friday morning. Geoffrey Campbell swept up the yachting prizes for his skill on board the Laser 2000.
On Friday afternoon, rowers and kayakers took on the breezy course and Caitlin MacDonald picked up three prizes for rowing, while Lachlan Peterson and Sarah Cameron- Sutcliffe were crowned winners of the junior section.
The ‘Old Drippy’ crew took home the raft race prize and also won second place for bestdressed raft.
The most hotly- contended event was the powerboat race, won by Steve White in his rib, while Bert Cameron took the prize in the solid hull section.
Regatta chairman, Alastair MacColl, said: ‘This is Great Britain’s most westerly regatta, and it isn’t one for the faint-hearted. We’ve seen worse conditions as we had to cancel the event in 2013, but it’s good to see competitors having to contend with the sea conditions.
‘In the old days, local crofters and fishermen, who earned a hard living from the sea, used to take a day out to pit their rowing and sailing skills against each other.’
Proceeds from the regatta will be split between the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Red Cross and West Ardnamurchan Jetty Association.
