A HIGHLAND-wide policy on travel expenses for patients visiting hospital has been given the go-ahead by NHS Highland health board last week.
Patients will now be reimbursed at 15p a mile, £35 for hotel accommodation, and £10 for staying overnight with family.
And now many islanders must now get a travel warrant before they travel on a ferry. All claims will have a £10 deduction, known as the ‘patient’s contribution’.
The board supported the need to have a Highland-wide policy on travel expenses that was consistent and more easily available and accessible to all patients and staff.
It was recognised that the policy is now clearer and is in line with Scottish government guidelines.
A review of the scheme is to be carried out by the health board and a revised policy implemented in 2016.
