A MAN employed by the army has been given four penalty points and fined £100 for driving at almost double the speed limit on a road in Taynuilt.

John Minto, of Swisscot avenue, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, appeared at Oban sheriff court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to driving his car at 59 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone.

Defence solicitor Laura McManus said the 27-year- old was on his way to an armed forces recruitment day on the afternoon of November 27 last year.

Ms McManus added: ‘It was near the national speed limit sign so my client accelerated in anticipation of reaching the 60mph limit.’
