Islay half marathon was ‘piece of cake’
PARTICIPANTS from Australia, the USA and mainland Europe, were among the 142 runners who took part in the Ardbeg Islay Half Marathon held at the beginning of the month.
First past the post in the men’s section was Stuart MacGeachy from Campbeltown with Craig Mattocks of Edinburgh in second place. Fife’s Keren MacPherson led the women with Julie Bevridge of Calderglen Harriers as runner-up.
The local men breaking the tape to take the first three places were Nicholas Bowman, David and Stuart Rountree. Islay ladies taking the lead places were Natalie Rountree, Mairi Wiggins and Caroline Morris.
The top men’s team was Calderglen Harriers of East Kilbride who just pipped Campbeltown running club into second place.
The Calderglen Harriers ladies’ team was also victorious although the Burgh Babes were close on their heels.
The race took place in ideal weather conditions and the course was described by one veteran runner as ‘a piece of cake’.
