New record at Mull half marathon

The Oban Times - - Sport -

THE 27th running of the Mull half marathon took place recently and was certainly one of the best! Even though the weather wasn’t perfect, compared to last year, it was clement and, with the return of Adrian Fitness, the experienced bus co- ordinator, all transport with runners, supporters and baggage moved flawlessly.

With the endless commitment of all organisers, support of local businesses and organisations and the invaluable contributions of all volunteers, carrying out the many vital jobs on the day, everything went to plan.

The course was modified to make it safer as it started off the main road and ran through the grounds of Bowman’s Court.

The timing chips all worked and the results were efficiently compiled thanks to Mark Young from MYEventTiming. A good party atmosphere was evident and enhanced by three very fine young pipers from The Isle of Mull Pipe Band.

Record As this was a new course, a new record time was set by Robert Gilroy from Cambuslang Harriers in 1:09:01.

But this time will be challenged next year with the £250, sponsored by CGL for breaking the record, up for grabs!

This, of course, was added to the already wonderful prize money, delightful trophies and stunning local produce baskets that are presented to the prize-winners!

For the event to continue and to grow, more much needed support and funding is required.

Thanks go to the sponsors, Salen Hotel, Craignure Inn, West Coast Motors, Mull Eagle Watch, Scottish Water and Argyll and Bute Council.

124 Runners took part in the Half Marathon, 65 in the 10K and 42 in the Junior races.

Thanks to Ronnie Campbell MBE for comparing the event and for his charming, witty and supportive comments to finishing runners.
