Doors close on cinema
A HIGHLAND community- owned cinema, which opened one week prior to the Oban Phoenix Cinema in 2012, has had to close its doors.
Papers lodged at Wick Sheriff court on July 24 show that Thurso Cinema is to be wound up by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
The company, The Thurso Cinema, Limited, ran Thurso on behalf of the community group which owned the building. The company had made a bid to run Oban Phoenix Cinema but the plans were rejected by the volunteer board.
Cinema convenor Louise Glen-Lee said: ‘It is a real shame to see a cinema close. At one point our hands were almost forced to go into partnership with the operating company at Thurso and it is thanks to a strong board and the support of the community that we decided to continue to keep our cinema in the hands of local people.
‘It would have been a great shame if we had gone into a partnership because we could also have been looking at closure today. We have had good summer trading and we are looking forward to welcoming plenty of visitors over the winter.’
