Commitment to help refugees
HIGHLAND council leader Margaret Davidson says the local authority is ‘committed’ to helping refugees fleeing from Syria.
At a cross-party meeting with aid charity Blythswood Care on Tuesday, councillor Davidson said the local authority would play a part in a government arranged resettlement scheme with the help of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA). She added: ‘We understand and share the genuine concerns of people across the Highlands about the desperate situation of thousands of people fleeing from the war in Syria.
‘The council is committed to do whatever it can to offer practical support. We have today advised COSLA we are willing to play our part in the government’s Syrian resettlement scheme.’
Councillor Davidson will meet community planning partners tomorrow (Friday) to hear what practical assistance can be given to refugees coming to the Highlands.
