Com­mit­ment to help refugees

HIGH­LAND coun­cil leader Mar­garet David­son says the lo­cal au­thor­ity is ‘com­mit­ted’ to help­ing refugees flee­ing from Syria.

At a cross-party meet­ing with aid char­ity Blythswood Care on Tues­day, coun­cil­lor David­son said the lo­cal au­thor­ity would play a part in a gov­ern­ment ar­ranged re­set­tle­ment scheme with the help of the Con­ven­tion of Scot­tish Lo­cal Author­i­ties (COSLA). She added: ‘We un­der­stand and share the gen­uine con­cerns of peo­ple across the High­lands about the des­per­ate sit­u­a­tion of thou­sands of peo­ple flee­ing from the war in Syria.

‘The coun­cil is com­mit­ted to do what­ever it can to of­fer prac­ti­cal sup­port. We have to­day ad­vised COSLA we are will­ing to play our part in the gov­ern­ment’s Syr­ian re­set­tle­ment scheme.’

Coun­cil­lor David­son will meet com­mu­nity plan­ning part­ners to­mor­row (Fri­day) to hear what prac­ti­cal as­sis­tance can be given to refugees com­ing to the High­lands.
