Driver was four times over the limit
A MAN who drank a bottle of whisky in his car then slept overnight in it has been banned for driving for a year.
William Doherty, of Achnasaul, Achnacarry, was driving to the house he is staying in while working in the area when he realised the single-track road leading there had been closed for the night.
When he appeared at Fort William Sheriff Court on Tuesday, the 49-year- old admitted driving with 82 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on August 15, almost four times the legal limit of 22 microgrammes in the same amount of breath.
Fiscal depute Ross Carvel said police discovered the joiner shortly before 6am ‘in a deep sleep and smelling strongly of alcohol’.
Defence solicitor Stephen Kennedy said Doherty had received news of a friend passing away which led him to drink. Sheriff David Young banned Doherty for 12 months and fined him £ 300.
