Celebrations as ensuite wigwam marks 21 years at Strathfillan

RENA and Tom Baillie have run Strathfillan Wigwams for 21 years and, along with their staff, are celebrating their success, as well as the launch of their new ensuite wigwam, with the cutting of a wigwam cake.

Strathfillan Wigwams was developed in 1994 on Scottish Agricultural College’s Auchtertyre Farm in Tyndrum as a farm diversification project.

Rena explained: ‘ The farm had lost the income from the suckler cow herd when all the cattle were sold off the farm, and we had to source a project that would equal the income from the cattle. We made the decision to invest capital providing low cost budget tourist accommodation.’

They started with two basic wooden wigwams, but as demand for them grew, they purchased additional units, as well as three other sites. Out of this venture grew the Wigwam® Holiday Network franchise, and the Wigwam® brand was born, creating the innovative concept of a ‘glamping holiday’.

‘Our wigwams have improved in design over the years and we now have a new ensuite deluxe wigwam that has been added to our existing Big Chief wigwams,’ Rena said. ‘They have created an absolutely fun outdoor holiday, where you can sit around your campfire, cook our exotic meat (which we sell in our shop) and best of all, relax, chill out and sit under the stars.’

Strathfillan Wigwam Village now boasts five deluxe lodges, 23 wigwams and a yurt, all situated on a working farm in the picturesque Trossachs National Park.

‘It is great fun for all the family, being adventurous in the great outdoors,’ Rena said. ‘Our wigwams have changed the lives of many, offering low cost accommodation for short breaks and providing access to the great outdoors.’

The Strathfillan Wigwam Village is the longest established ‘glamping’ Wigwam® site in the UK, which now extends to more than 70 stunning destinations throughout the UK and Ireland – and it all started in the hills of Tyndrum.
