Youth rugby round-up
Cumbernauld U18 5-17 Oban U18
OBAN Lorne U18 team travelled to Cumbernauld on Saturday to play their first fixture of the season. The team numbers were boosted with three players from Campbeltown who made the long journey to Cumbernauld.
With a bare 15 players, the game started with uncontested scrums but this did not prevent an entertaining game of rugby. Oban started strong and were quick to return the kick off into Cumbernauld territory.
Strong running from Daniel Speirs and Steven Povey set up good rucks for Xvava Rush to crash over for the first try.
Oban continued to play quick rugby despite some thundering tackles from the Cumbernauld players. Xvava Rush was once again responsible for breaking the gain line and causing problems for Cumbernauld.
Ruairidh Lister- Campbell and Steven Povey worked hard at the breakdown to secure possession and a succession of pick and go resulted in Rush taking another short ball at pace, and proving to strong to stop. Oban led 10- 0 after two unsuccessful conversions.
Cumbernauld started to come back into the game towards the end of the half and strong defence from the Oban wingers held them out. Eventually the cracks appeared in a tired Oban defence and allowed Cumbernauld to crash over the line after a successful series of rucks.
Owen Pickering started to spread the ball wide for Oban and giving the backs some space to run resulted in Daniel Speirs making the break and finishing the half with a try and successful conversion.
The second half had no scores but both teams played exciting rugby and credit is due to those players who were competing in their first game: Nat Petre and Phillip Schmolzer
The next game for the U18s is on November 21 away to Cartha Queens Park. Training is on a Thursday after school on the 3g pitch.
OBAN U16s had no league game on Sunday due to Newton Stewart struggling to field a team. The U16s are away to Kilmarnock RFC this Sunday in their next league game.
