Call for improved mobile coverage on islands

The Oban Times - - News -

HEAD of infrastructure at Argyll and Bute Council has written to the Westminster Government to raise concerns about the number of islands that are not included on a target list for mobile phone signal improvements.

Pippa Milne says she is concerned that not having the service puts the people who live in these areas at a disadvantage.

Tiree, Iona, Colonsay, Luing, Gigha, Lismore, Bute, Ulva and Kerrera are all missing from the government’s plan to improve mobile phone connectivity.

She said: ‘Communication links on these islands are crucial and more so in emergency situations.’

She continued: ‘Very few settlements [in Argyll] benefit from a 4G service and some lack reliable 2G coverage.’

She says it is vital that the main transport routes have mobile phone connectivity.
