SOUTH UIST youngsters did their bit recently to raise awareness about mouth cancer when they donned some blue lips.

Pupils of Iochdar Primary School on the island learned about the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer during a visit from Lochboisdale Dental Practice staff. The staff also took the opportunity to carry out fluoride varnishing on the children’s teeth.

Morag MacKinnon, dental therapist and oral health improvement co- ordinator at Lochboisdale, said: ‘ We took the opportunity to make teachers and staff aware of the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer. We also explained to the children that when they come to the dentist we check not just their teeth but also their lips, tongues and cheeks.’
