A 170-MIL­LION-YEAR- OLD fos­sil found on the is­land has turned out to be the fi­nal piece of an evo­lu­tion­ary mystery. Ox­ford Univer­sity stu­dents dis­cov­ered part of a jaw from a mouse-sized mam­mal, which was the miss­ing piece that links two pre­vi­ous find­ings.

Sci­en­tists ori­gially thought the ear­lier finds came from three dif­fer­ent species be­cause of the dif­fer­ences in the shape of the teeth, but, in fact, they join to­gether and show­case an im­por­tant step in the evo­lu­tion­ary process from when teeth were evolv­ing.
